Adrenaline (epinephrine)
medication Under reviewEpinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is a catecholamine hormone and neurotransmitter produced in the adrenal medulla and certain neurons. It plays a central role in the body’s acute stress or “fight‑or‑flight” response, rapidly increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow to muscles while mobilizing energy substrates such as glucose and fatty acids. Pharmacologic epinephrine is a synthetic version of this endogenous hormone and is widely used in emergency medicine for anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and sometimes severe asthma or septic shock. Although sometimes discussed in alternative health circles under terms like “adrenal extracts” or “adrenal support,” epinephrine itself is not a nutritional supplement. It is a potent prescription or over‑the‑counter drug (depending on formulation and jurisdiction) with narrow indications and significant risks if misused. In healthy individuals, research on epinephrine largely involves acute experimental infusions or injections to study cardiovascular, metabolic, and autonomic responses, rather than long‑term use to improve general health.
Research summary
Human research on epinephrine in healthy volunteers focuses on its cardiovascular, metabolic, and autonomic effects when administered acutely via infusion, injection, or inhalation. These studies consistently show dose‑dependent increases in heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output, and plasma glucose, along with reduced insulin sensitivity and enhanced lipolysis. Epinephrine also modulates immune cell trafficking, platelet function, and bronchial tone. The intent of such trials is mechanistic understanding and drug‑response characterization, not chronic health optimization. There is no evidence supporting epinephrine as a safe or beneficial “supplement” for healthy people. Instead, the literature emphasizes risks such as arrhythmias, marked blood pressure elevation, anxiety, tremor, and other adverse events when used outside appropriate medical indications. Long‑term or repeated non‑medical use has not been systematically studied in healthy subjects due to ethical and safety concerns, and clinical consensus is that epinephrine should be reserved for acute, clearly defined medical emergencies rather than routine performance or wellness enhancement.
