medication Under reviewAndrogens are a class of steroid hormones that include testosterone and related compounds. They are produced mainly in the testes, ovaries, and adrenal glands, and they help regulate sexual development, libido, muscle maintenance, mood, and aspects of metabolic health. In supplement and research contexts, the term often refers to testosterone, prohormones, or androgenic compounds intended to raise androgen activity. Their effects are mediated through the androgen receptor and, in some tissues, by conversion to estrogen via aromatase. In healthy adults, androgen exposure is most often associated with changes in body composition and reproductive hormones, while nonmedical use can also produce hormone disruption and other adverse effects.
Research summary
In healthy human studies, androgen-related interventions have shown the clearest effects on sexual development, libido, and small changes in lean mass or body composition, but benefits for athletic performance are inconsistent and often absent. The evidence is much stronger for prescription testosterone or well-characterized androgenic compounds than for over-the-counter prohormones, which have generally failed to improve muscle mass or performance in healthy men. The overall research consensus is that androgens can be physiologically important when levels are low, but adding them in already healthy people produces limited and sometimes unfavorable tradeoffs. Reported concerns include reduced HDL cholesterol, potential endocrine disruption, and androgenic side effects, while evidence for broad wellness or performance enhancement remains weak or inconsistent.
