Chlorzoxazone
medication Under reviewA centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant used as an adjunct for the relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Research summary
The human research base for chlorzoxazone is mostly pharmacokinetic and biomarker-oriented rather than supplement-style health optimization. Healthy volunteer studies show it can serve as a relatively robust in vivo probe of CYP2E1 activity, with measurable metabolism in plasma after a single oral dose and acceptable intra-individual consistency. For direct symptomatic benefit in humans, evidence is limited and mixed. A randomized blinded trial in postoperative spine surgery patients found no meaningful analgesic benefit from a single 500 mg dose versus placebo, and there are no good healthy-human studies supporting broader wellness benefits. Safety information from medical references also notes rare but potentially serious liver injury, which is the main clinically important concern.
