Ergometrine
medication Under reviewAn ergot alkaloid medication used to assist in the delivery of the placenta and to prevent or control postpartum hemorrhage.
Research summary
In healthy human studies focused on obstetric use, ergometrine and related ergot alkaloids have shown benefit in reducing postpartum blood loss and lowering the need for additional uterotonic treatment. Evidence from systematic review data suggests these agents may also raise maternal hemoglobin after delivery, although the quality of evidence varies from low to moderate. The main documented downside in human trials is an increased risk of elevated blood pressure and post-delivery pain requiring analgesia. Rare but clinically important cardiovascular vasospasm and myocardial ischemia have also been reported in case literature, making cardiovascular safety a key limitation of the drug.
