Etidronate
medication Under reviewA bisphosphonate medication used to treat Paget's disease of bone and prevent heterotopic ossification.
Research summary
Clinical research on etidronate demonstrates mixed but meaningful results depending on the condition. For postmenopausal osteoporosis, long-term studies show etidronate increases vertebral bone mineral content and maintains fracture rate reductions over extended periods. However, a comprehensive Cochrane systematic review found that etidronate probably makes little to no difference in preventing vertebral and non-vertebral fractures for both primary and secondary prevention in postmenopausal women. More recently, a pilot study in patients with Arterial Calcification due to Deficiency of CD73 (ACDC)βa rare genetic disorderβfound that etidronate was safe and well-tolerated, and appeared to slow the progression of new vascular calcification in the lower extremities, though it did not reverse existing calcifications.
