Insulin Detemir
medication Under reviewA long-acting human insulin analog used to improve glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Research summary
Insulin detemir is a prescription medication indicated for diabetes, not a general supplement for healthy individuals. Nearly all clinical research focuses on people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, evaluating its efficacy and safety as a basal insulin replacement. There is essentially no evidence supporting its use for performance enhancement, metabolic optimization, or other benefits in healthy, non-diabetic humans. In diabetic populations, randomized trials and observational studies show that insulin detemir offers glycemic control comparable to other basal insulins, with advantages in lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia, reduced glycemic variability, and less weight gain versus NPH and often versus other long-acting analogs. However, in healthy individuals, exogenous insulin use poses a clear risk of hypoglycemia without any established health benefit. For this reason, insulin detemir should be regarded strictly as a therapeutic drug for diabetes management rather than a supplement for healthy people.
