Insulin Glargine
medication Under reviewA long-acting basal insulin analog used to manage blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
Research summary
The human evidence for insulin glargine comes largely from diabetes trials and pharmacology studies rather than studies in healthy adults. In the limited healthy-human data available, it shows insulin-like metabolic and vascular effects similar to regular human insulin, including acute enhancement of endothelial function and suppression of free fatty acids. Overall, the research consensus is that insulin glargine is an effective and generally well-tolerated basal insulin with a flatter action profile and lower nocturnal hypoglycemia risk than older basal insulins in diabetic populations. Because this request is restricted to healthy human subjects, the evidence base for benefits is very limited and no supplement-style health benefits are established for healthy people.
