Insulin Glulisine
medication Under reviewA rapid-acting human insulin analog used to improve glycemic control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.
Research summary
The scientific evidence in healthy humans mainly comes from pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies, rather than disease-treatment trials. These studies consistently show that insulin glulisine has a faster onset and shorter duration of action than regular human insulin, which explains why it is classified as a rapid-acting insulin analog. Clinical efficacy studies in people with diabetes suggest it can provide glycemic control comparable to or somewhat better than regular insulin in some settings, but those studies are not in healthy subjects and therefore are not the basis for this summary. In healthy people, the evidence is strong for its rapid insulin action and short time course, but not for any health benefit beyond controlled glucose-lowering research use.
