Levofloxacin
medication Under reviewA broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Research summary
Human research on levofloxacin is extensive, but it consistently evaluates the drug as an antibiotic for treating infections rather than as a general health or performance supplement. Clinical trials and observational studies in humans demonstrate efficacy for pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, prostatitis, skin infections, and as part of regimens for tuberculosis and multidrug‑resistant tuberculosis, among other indications. Pharmacokinetic work in healthy volunteers has clarified dose–exposure relationships, safety at different dose levels, and tissue penetration. At the same time, a large body of post‑marketing surveillance, randomized trials, and regulatory reviews has documented important safety concerns, including tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system effects, dysglycemia, and QT interval prolongation, leading to multiple boxed warnings. There is no evidence that levofloxacin provides benefits such as improved cognition, athletic performance, longevity, or metabolic health in healthy individuals, and the risk profile makes off‑label “supplement‑like” use inappropriate.
