Research summary
Clinical research demonstrates that primidone is effective for essential tremor, with efficacy comparable to propranolol in reducing hand tremor magnitude. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed primidone was significantly superior to placebo, and in some cases reduced tremor to non-symptomatic levels. However, primidone is associated with considerable adverse drug reactions, particularly in essential tremor patients, and an acute toxic reaction was observed in a notable proportion of trial participants at initial dosing.
