Research summary
Human studies of quazepam are focused largely on adults with insomnia and healthy volunteers, rather than on general wellness applications. Placebo-controlled sleep laboratory and outpatient trials consistently show that quazepam at doses of 7.5โ15 mg improves objective and subjective sleep measures, including sleep latency, total sleep time, number of awakenings, early morning awakening, and overall sleep quality. These effects have been demonstrated over short-term periods of several nights and in longer-term studies of up to four weeks and, in some trials, nearly a month of continuous use. In healthy human volunteers, single-dose pharmacodynamic studies indicate that quazepam produces minimal impairment of psychomotor performance, memory, and daytime alertness at standard hypnotic doses, especially when compared with shorter-acting benzodiazepines such as triazolam and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics like zolpidem. Nonetheless, sleep laboratory data in patients show that daytime sleepiness can occur with sustained use, reflecting its long half-life and active metabolites. Overall, the research supports quazepam as an effective hypnotic for insomnia with a relatively favorable cognitive and performance profile at therapeutic doses, but with recognized risks of sedation, tolerance, and dependence typical of benzodiazepine-class drugs.
