Yohimbine
supplement Under reviewAn alkaloid derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, often used for its potential fat-burning and performance-enhancing effects.
Research summary
Human research on yohimbine demonstrates clear and consistent activation of the sympathetic nervous system, with dose-dependent increases in plasma norepinephrine, epinephrine, blood pressure, and heart rate in healthy volunteers. Controlled exercise studies suggest that yohimbine can acutely improve certain aspects of physical performance, including repeated sprint ability and some resistance-training performance, and it reliably increases subjective feelings of energy and alertness in trained individuals. There is limited but suggestive evidence that it may modestly augment fat loss when combined with exercise and calorie control, though findings are not robust and can be inconsistent. On the other hand, the overall clinical evidence for yohimbine in areas such as sexual function and weight management is considered weak to moderate at best, and high-quality long-term safety data in healthy users are lacking. Adverse effects such as anxiety, nervousness, gastrointestinal discomfort, tachycardia, elevated blood pressure, and, in some reports, more serious cardiovascular events have been documented, especially at higher doses or in combination with other stimulants. Consequently, while yohimbine is a physiologically potent compound with measurable ergogenic and sympathomimetic effects, its riskβbenefit profile is narrow, and careful dosing and medical oversight are advisable.
